Tamarind Pulihora

 

 

 

 

 
Equipment:
  • Medium frying pan for frying
  • Pressure Cooker / Big Pot with Lid for cooking rice
Ingredients:
  • Rice                          –       1 cup
  • Tamarind Paste              –       5 teaspoons
  • Turmeric Powder          –       1 teaspoon
  • Green Chillies                  –       6
  • Red Chillies                    –       1
  • Peanuts or Cashews      –       2 tablespoons
  • Mustard Seeds                 –       1 teaspoon
  • Chana Daal                      –       2 teaspoons
  • Urad Daal                       –       2 teaspoons
  • Hing                            –       a small pinch
  • Curry Leaves                    –       10-12 leaves
  • Sesame oil or canola oil –       2 tablespoon
  • Salt                            –       3/4 teaspoon

 

 

 

Preparation:

1. Cook 1 cup rice by adding 2 cups of water. Allow it to completely cool down

2. Heat the oil and add mustard seeds. Once they start sputtering, add red chillies, chana daal, urad daal, peanuts(or cashews) and let them fry for few seconds

3. Add curry leaves and split green chillies.

4. Add tamarind paste and turmeric powder to this oil. (For added taste, you can add 1/2 tsp jaggery powder to this paste)

5. When the paste looks cooked and oil starts separating, add salt and remove from heat

6. Add this mixture to rice and mix well.

7. Yummy pulihora is ready to be enjoyed
